Flake & Flames – Das Kustom Kulture Abenteuer

Ein Dokumentarfilm über die weltweite Kustom Kulture-Szene? Was soll das denn sein und was ist überhaupt Kustom Kulture?
Im Laufe des letzten Jahres reifte bei den beiden Freunden Jesper Bram (Pinstriper und Designer aus Dänemark) und Dirk Behlau (Designer und Fotograf aus Köln) die Idee eines gemeinsamen Filmprojektes, bei dem erstmals das weltweite Phänomen der Kustom Kulture-Szene mit Schwerpunkt auf der LowBrow-Kunst erfasst und beleuchtet werden sollte.
Was verbirgt sich eigentlich hinter dem kryptischen Begriff Kustom Kulture?
Kustom Kulture ist ein Oberbegriff unter anderem für Kunst, Fahrzeuge, Frisuren, Musik- und Kleidungsstile und von Angehörigen der Customizing-Szene, die Autos und Motorräder umbauen und veredeln. Aus den Anfängen des Hot Rodding in den USA der 1950er-Jahre haben sich teilweise voneinander unabhängig verschiedene Stile entwickelt. Diese Stile gehen inzwischen in vielen Bereichen wie beispielsweise Tattoos, Custom Cars, Motorräder, Musik (Surfrock, Punk, Rockabilly, usw.), Mode und Kunst fließend ineinander über und prägen auch heute noch viele Szenen und Stile stark. Namen wie Von Dutch (DER legendäre Pinstriper), „Big Daddy“ Ed Roth (Rat Fink-Erfinder und Customizer), George Barris (Customizer der z.B. die Batman und „The Munsters“ Autos entwickelte) hat vermutlich jeder mindestens einmal gehört, der sich auch nur grob mit den oben genannten Szenen auseinandergesetzt hat. Gepaart mit Anlehnungen an Cartoons, Trash- und Monsterfilme aus den 1950er- bis 1970er-Jahren hat dies die Kustom Kulture zu der komplexen Subkultur gemacht, die sie heute ist. Durch die extreme Artenvielfalt hat auch fast jeder eine ganz eigene Definition, was für ihn selbst Kustom Kulture ausmacht.
Ende April diesen Jahres machten sich Jesper Bram und Dirk Behlau begleitet vom deutschen Pinstriper und Tattoo-Künstler MAZE auf nach Los Angeles, um dort in 10 Tagen einen wahren Besichtigungs- und Interviewmarathon mit der Créme de la Créme der amerikanischen Kustom Szene umzusetzen. Neben Südkalifornien stand auch auch ein Abstecher nach San Francisco auf dem Plan, um dort unter anderem mit Dirty Donny (der beispielsweise für Metallica Gitarren und Flipper designed) und dem Actiontoy-Guru Frank Kozik in ihren Musclecars durch SF zu cruisen.
Zuerst aber wurde der Großraum um Los Angeles abgesteckt um den Pinstriper und Airbrush-Spezialisten Von Franco zu Hause in seinem Studio zu interviewen, wobei er ganz nebenbei ein T-Shirt mit Monstern und Hot Rod-Cartoons airbrushte und aus dem Nähkästchen über vergangene Tage mit Ed Roth und Von Dutch plauderte. Tattoo-Artist und Hot Rod-/Bikebuilder Dan Collins zeigte den Jungs in seiner „Old´s Gold“ Garage, wie man Motorradteile veredelt und der Illustrator und Bassist Robert Kruse nahm sie abends zu einer Bandprobe seiner Band „The Dynotones“ mit, die jede Woche in der Hot Rod-Garage des Gitarristen Dano stattfindet.
Coop – weltberühmt vor allem für seinen rauchenden Teufelskopf - besuchten sie ebenfalls in seinem Studio, wo er gerade damit beschäftigt war, großformatige Leinwände mit seiner abgefahrenen Kunst für eine kommende Ausstellung zu bemalen. The Pizz machte eine komplette Hausführung (wobei Museum als Beschreibung passender wäre) mit dem Team und buddelte in seinen Archiven aus über 50-Jahren LowBrow-Kunst. Das alles in ein paar Zeilen ausführlich darzustellen ist nahezu unmöglich. Sicher ist nur, dass das Kustom Kulture Kunst-Universum so vielseitig, abwechslungsreich und inspirierend ist, wie kaum eine andere Kreativ-Szene. Das und vieles mehr wurde schon in den bisher verfügbaren Teaser- und Behind the Scenes-Videos auf der Flake & Flames Website zusammengefasst.
Im Moment nutzen wir die Möglichenkeiten des "Crowd Funding" auf der bekannten Crowd Funding Plattform IndieGoGo zur weiteren Finanzierung des Films, was allerdings nicht nur bedeutet: "Wir tun gutes und fühlen uns dann grandios" ;) Nein, diejenigen die den Film unterstützen können zwischen verschiedenen "Packages" wählen. Für beispielsweise nur $55 Dollar erhält man das "Appreciation Package", dass ein Flake & Flames T-Shirt von Dirty Donny, die signierte DVD des fertigen Filmes, einen limitierten Sticker sowie den Namen und Link auf der Dankesliste auf der Flake & Flames Website beinhaltet.
Noch bis Ende August 2011 läuft das Funding, das Ziel ist es $18.000 zusammenzubekommen um den Film fertigzustellen - u.a. ist das Geld für die Deckung der Reisekosten. Stand 09.08.2011 sind bereits ca. $6.500 zusammengekommen. Bereits ab $5 Dollar geht es los! Wir sind dankbar für jeden Supporter!

Über die Filmemacher:
Jesper Bram, Jahrgang 1973, ist ein dänischer Pinstriper und Künstler. Er arbeitete jahrelang in der Werbebranche und gewann viele begehrte Awards im Bereich Grafik Design. Jesper fährt seit seiner Kindheit völlig auf Custom Cars und Motorräder ab und malt seit frühesten Jahren. 2009 gründete er sein Pinstriping- und Designstudio J.Bram Kustom Graphics.
Dirk Behlau aka „The Pixeleye“, Jahrgang 1971, ist ein international anerkannter Designer und Fotograf aus Köln. Seit 1999 entwickelt er individuelle Lösungen für internationale Kunden und Magazine. Am liebsten bewegt er sich beruflich und privat in der Schnittmenge aus Punkrock, Tattoo Art, Hot Rod-/Kustom Kulture und reist dafür um die Welt. Dirk führte bereits Regie bei der DVD Produktion „Drag Racing Turtman Switzerland 2007“ und hat gerade ein neues Musikvideo für die finnische Rockband Leningrad Cowboys abgedreht.

About - Flake & Flames - The Kustom Kulture Adventure.
Flakes & Flames is a feature length documentary film about the astonishing Kustom Kulture movement around the globe. By Dirk "The Pixeleye" Behlau and Jesper Bram.
We are spending a year traveling U.S. and Europe in search of the coolest Kustom Kulture people and events on the planet. Picking the brains of living legends, up and coming artists and builders within the culture.
We seek out some of the hottest Kustom Kulture spots and get some of the worlds best car and motorcycle builders, tattoo artists, pinstripers, custom painters and pin-up models to share their tricks and experience.
The Goal.
It is our goal to create a film that kick ass, looks great and is full of great insights wether you never heard of Kustom Kulture before or have lived it all your life. If you are new to Kustom Kulture we will show you what fantastic creativity and passion that exists behind terms like; Low Brow Art, Hot Rod building, Custom, Pinstriping etc. If you are familiar with Kustom Kulture already, we want you to watch and learn from the masters and have a rare look into the private workshops of some Kustom Kulture legends of our time.
What we have done so far?
We have been in California filming awesome material with some of the greatest Kustom Kulture artists and fabricators. Including; The Pizz, Von Franco, Frank Kozik, Dirty Donny, Bob Spina, Rob Kruze, Coop, Cole Foster, Kutty Noteboom, Dan Collins, Doug Dorr, Arie Van Schyndel. The video you see above is a small taste of what we got in the box from that.
What is next?
The next step to complete the film, is seeking out the European artists and fabricators. Although Kustom Kulture originated in U.S. the film would be incomplete without some of the amazing talent Europe has to offer. Like; Pekka Wizzz from Finland, Blaster from Italy, Maze from Germany, Empire 32 from Luxembourg, Von Sven from Sweden, and many more.
What do I fund?
Traveling is by far the biggest post on our budget. The people we seek out don’t exactly live next to each other. We funded the filming in California out of our own pockets, which are now empty. The money we raise here will be used to fund filming some of the very best European artists and builders. This covers plane tickets, lodging, car rental, boat fares, gas, and our most necessary living expenses when we are on the road. The plan is to finish filming during the remaining half of 2011, and then start on post production. We aim to release the film early 2012.

Pass The Bucket with Tony Alva

Considered to be one of the the most influential skateboarders of all time, Tony Alva, an original Z-Boy, hit a bottom 4 years ago battling drug addiction and alcoholism. There, at his lowest point, his reliance on successes and ego came into perspective for the first time. Tony's fight for sobriety and truth has recently lead him to a new perspective on life and direction moving forward. Dedicated to giving back Tony now see's passing the bucket as the only way out.

Since 2003 every year the Airport "Schwarze Heide" in Bottrop turns into one of the biggest Kustom Kulture Shows in Europe. Car Clubs & Lone Wolfs from all over Europe come to show their Hot Rods, Kustom Cars and Cool Motorbikes!
We have around 250 pre 1965 hot rods and kustom cars and 100 bad ass bikes. And they don´t only show them standing around! They will be racing their machines in 2011, too on the vintage 1/8 mile race on the airport. The Kustom Kulture Show in Bottrop is not only famous for the Hot Rods, Kustom Cars and bikes - it´s famous because of the really large group of over 30 Kustom Kulture artist from all over the world. Dont miss it, its the only one in Europe where all this shit comes together - and we have the best party peoples around!

“The world famous Kool Lifestyle Photographer Dirk “The Pixeleye” Behlau and the acclaimed Pinstriper and Artist, Jesper Bram join forces on an astonishing adventure to make a documentary Film about the Kustom Kulture movement around the globe.”
Dirk and Jesper will spend a year going from California through Europe and end in Japan in search of the coolest Kustom Kulture people and events on the planet. Picking the brains of living legends, up and coming artists and builders within the culture.
The guys seek out some of the hottest Kustom Kulture spots and get some of the worlds best car and motorcycle builders, tattoo artists, pinstripers, custom painters and pin-up models to share their tricks and experience.
Who are these two morons?
Dirk Behlau, aka „The Pixeleye“, born in 1971, is an internationally acclaimed designer and photographer from Cologne/Germany. Since 1999, he has created individual high-class solutions for international customers in his design-studio „Pixeleye Interactive“.

Dirk Behlau has previously directed the DVD “Drag Racing – Turtman Switzerland 2007”, as well as shot several trailers and teasers for the legendary finnish rockband Leningrad Cowboys and other bands.
Jesper Bram, born 1973 is a renowned Danish pinstriper and artist. He has a strong background in advertising and holds multiple awards and nominations in graphic design. As an entrepreneur, Jesper has been involved in several large scale international projects since the mid nineties.
Jesper has been into custom cars and motorcycles since childhood and has been drawing just as long. In 2009 he founded his automotive pinstriping and design studio J.Bram Kustom Graphics.
