Alltime Masterpiece / Sergio Leone: Once upon a time in America

Auf drei ineinander verwobenen zeitlichen Ebenen erzählt Leone sein amerikanisches Märchen über eine Bande krimineller Halbwüchsiger in New York (1922/23), die durch Schutzgelderpressungen, gewaltsame Beseitigung von Konkurrenten und durch Alkoholschmuggel während der Prohibitionszeit zu schnellem Reichtum und Macht gelangen und sich, erwachsen geworden, 1932/1933 entscheiden müssen, im großen Stil ins organisierte Verbrechen und hauptberuflich in die politische Korruption einzusteigen.
Um Max von einem selbstmörderischen Banküberfall abzuhalten, gibt Noodles der Polizei einen Tipp über eine geplante Alkoholschmuggelfahrt. Doch außer ihm, der anschließend untertauchen muss, weil er von der Mafia verfolgt wird, werden alle Bandenmitglieder von der Polizei erschossen, statt verhaftet.
1968 bestellt ein Brief Noodles, dessen Versteck aufgespürt wurde, nach New York. Dort trifft er auf den tot geglaubten Max. Dieser hat 1934 durch ein Arrangement mit der Polizei eine neue Identität erhalten, der er seine politische Karriere verdankt. Als „Staatssekretär Bailey“ lebt er inzwischen mit Noodles' Jugendliebe Deborah zusammen. Der vermeintliche Verräter Noodles, der sich 35 Jahre lang Vorwürfe wegen des Todes seiner Freunde gemacht hat, erweist sich selbst als verratenes Opfer.
Die Originalversion mit ihren Zeitsprüngen wurde in Europa stets im Original gezeigt. Für die USA existierte eine zusätzliche Variante ohne Zeitsprünge, die dem dortigen Publikum das Verständnis erleichtern sollte.

Allin, who had been arrested over 50 times-on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to exposing himself to minors to public defecation-broke parole to appear in this film. Featured is not only his live act that drew the curious and scared the knowing, but the injuries, police activity and rock 'n' roll savagery that will be his legacy."
GG Allin, mit bürgerlichem Namen Kevin Michael Allin (* 29. August 1956 als Jesus Christ Allin in Lancaster, New Hampshire, USA; † 28. Juni 1993 in New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Rock- und Punkmusiker.
Seine Shows, die er ebenso wie seine Aufnahmen mit stets wechselnden Mitmusikern bestritt, waren extreme Performances unter Einbeziehung des Publikums; unter anderem attackierte er sein Publikum, verstümmelte sich selbst auf der Bühne, aß seine eigenen Exkremente oder masturbierte.
In den späten 1980ern und frühen 1990ern war er Gast vieler Talkshows, in denen er seine Vision einer Mission für den Rock ’n’ Roll kundtat: Er wollte "die Gefahr zurück zum Rock n Roll" bringen, den Krieg im Rock-’n’-Roll-Untergrund erklären und sein Vorhaben darstellen, dass er auf der Bühne Suizid begehen und einen möglichst großen Teil des Publikums "mitnehmen" wolle.
Kevin Michael Allin alias GG Allin starb 1993 in New York nach einem vorzeitig abgebrochenen Konzert an einer Überdosis Heroin.

On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York's twin towers, then the world's tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released.
Following six and a half years of dreaming of the towers, Petit spent eight months in New York City planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, Petit was faced with numerous extraordinary challenges: he had to find a way to bypass the WTC's security; smuggle the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan...
James Marsh's documentary brings Petit's extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of Philippe himself, and some of the co-conspirators who helped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as "the artistic crime of the century."
