Vans: Off the Wall: Stories of Sole from Van's Originals

"Off the Wall", the first book from Vans, tells the multi-generational story of Vans' do-it-yourself community, which encompasses boards, bikes, art and music, as well as the one shoe keeping it all together. With oral histories from Tony Alva, Joel Tudor, Neckface, Shepard Fairey, Sunny Garcia, Marc Jacobs, Steve Caballero, Stacy Peralta, Robert Williams, Oliver Peck, and others, "Off the Wall" provides an intimate, visually-stunning account of how the company changed the face of popular culture, since its founding in 1966. The book features photography by the top action-sports photographers in the world, including Bryce Kanights, Grant Brittain, Jeff Divine, and Trevor Graces, presented with an energetic design that evokes both punkzine aesthetic and California coastal cool.

Disposable 2 - A Skateboard Bible: A Skateboard Collector's Bible

With the release of "Disposable - A History of Skateboard Art" in 2004, author Sean Cliver made a brilliant attempt at artfully cataloging every important skateboard deck ever released. In the process, he created a classic, but was left feeling less than whole. Ever the completist, the gaping omissions in the first book gnawed at him and drove him to envision compiling 'the' ultimate encyclopedia of Skateboard decks. While "Disposable" was beautiful, capturing the essence of the aesthetic, "Disposable II" sets out to be the Bible. The author's industry insider status (in 1989, he landed his first job as a designer at Powell-Peralta) allow him to walk the reader through the culture, the art and the mania with authority. While the boards take centre stage, fascinating vignettes and recollections by a who's who of skateboarding round out the book.

ONLY DEATH IS REAL: An Illustrated History of Hellhammer and Early Celtic Frost, by Tom Gabriel Fischer with Martin Eric Ain

"Former HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST mainman Tom Gabriel Fischer and Bazillion Points Books have announced November 2009 as the publication date for "Only Death Is Real: An Illustrated History of Hellhammer and Early Celtic Frost". Authored by Fischer with cooperation from HELLHAMMER/FROST partner Martin Eric Ain, the deluxe large-format 288pp hardcover will feature over 300 astonishing high-quality photos by Csaba Kézér, Martin Kyburz, and Andreas Schwarber documenting the very dawn of death metal and black metal.

Five years in the making, this extraordinary artifact sets an audacious new historical standard in heavy metal literature.

HELLHAMMER's adolescent hardships were played out in dramatic and sometimes violent episodes set in small villages around Zurich, Switzerland, during 1983 and 1984. The ultimate insider document of the earliest era of death metal and black metal, "Only Death Is Real" documents this unique and cataclysmic moment in modern music history with hundreds of never-seen vintage images, classic artwork reprinted by kind permission of HR Giger, a full visual reference to HELLHAMMER promotional material, flyers, and memorabilia documenting the birth and evolution of extreme metal—all supported by sharp-tongued oral accounts direct from Tom G. Fischer, Martin Ain, Stephen Priestly, Steve Warrior, and other survivors of the HELLHAMMER inner circle."

Hotrod Empire Inc. - Photography by Dirk Behlau
Dirk Behlau, or Pixeleye, as his known to his friends and foes alike, is arguably Germany’s foremost photographer and documentarian of the local hot rod scene. His still images of everything and anything that moves on four wheels and is frequently accompanied by beautiful creatures in short skirts speak volumes.

They are also bound in volumes; two, to be precise.Hotrod Empire Inc. is Dirk’s second picture book, and most likely not his last. We like it a lot, mainly because it has lots of rockability, but also because it doesn’t contain any pesky words and sentences to slave over; it’s all photos, and lots of them to boot. Well, there are some words, actually, but they’re at the beginning and at the end of the book. And they’re easy to read ’cause they’re in English.

As far as the visual content of the book goes, there are cars, of course, cool-looking American cars, some of which you might have seen already in RebelRodz—like Jay-Jay’s ’35 Ford that we featured in issue No. 4 (February ’08), for instance.

There are also girls in this book, girls like the beautiful Zoe Scarlett, Switzerland’s pre-eminent pinup model and seemingly Dirks perennially favorite subject, or the very sexy Maureen van Mortis. And there’s art; art must not be omitted from any book about kustom kulture. There’s Doug Dorr pinstriping a tiki head, Skratch pinstriping a
headlight, Doug Dorr again, pinstriping Zoe. And on it goes.

While all of the photography is first class, some of it is even more first class because it’s made to look like third-class snap shot art: coffee-stained, scratched up, scruffed up, seemingly out of focus, off-centered, greasesplattered pictures, all in an effort to lend age, use and authenticity to a genre that thrives on living in a greasy, rusty past.

More than anything, however, there are kars, kars, and more kars to ogle and admire, and that’s really what it should be all about, with or without explanatory words. After all, if a picture is worth a thousand words, Dirk’s slim little coffee table book is one enormous, wordy tome!

So do yourself a favor and check it out! For more info or how to order it, simply go to Dirk’s website: www.pixeleye.de. As they say in Germany: Yoo vil buy it und yoo vil like it! –J.W.
